Vevo Music Video Site Goes Live
Vevo, which was initially backed by YouTube and Universal Music Group when announced in April of this year, went live on Tuesday. The site will feature 14,675 videos from more than five thousand artists in more than 20 categories. Users will also be able to create video playlists, either through Vevo.com, or through YouTube’s Vevo channel.
The new site has garnered support over the past year with Sony Music Entertainment joining the venture in June, and AT&T s in October. Also, Abu Dhabi Media Company contributed a reported $300 million. Then earlier this month, Vevo announced a deal with CBS Interactive Music Group, which will provide users with access to CBS content from Last.fm and 90 other CBS Radio music stations. On Monday, EMI Music announced it would share content from its labels.
Vevo will employ an advertising-supported revenue model, in which its founding partners will share a slice. The site is a natural evolution of YouTube’s video service in that it will allow for the greater management of the site’s popular music content along with enhanced functionality.
